The fascinating true story of the origins of fabled Augusta National Golf Club and the creation of America’s most prestigious golf tournament, the Masters.Contested the second weekend in April each year since 1934, the Masters is the world’s most prestigious golf tournament and most-watched tournament on television. Tickets are in such demand that even the waiting list is closed, and players value the title above all others. In Making the Masters, award-winning golf writer David Barrett focuses his attention on how the Masters was conceived, how it got off the ground in 1934, and how it fully established itself in 1935.The key figure in the tournament’s creation and success was Bobby Jones, who was a living legend after winning the Grand Slam in 1930 and immediately retiring at the age of twenty-eight. He went on to found Augusta National and sought a high-profile tournament for his new course. But nearly as important was Clifford Roberts, a banker friend of Jones who not only embraced Jones’s vision but became his right-hand man in working to bring that vision to reality.Barrett explores how Jones and Roberts built the Masters from scratch, creating a golf institution embellished by the often surprising details of what that entailed as they were trying to establish a golf club and golf tournament in tough economic times. It also vividly chronicles the events of the 1934 and 1935 Masters, with Gene Sarazen’s spectacular victory in 1935 providing the climax. Set against the backdrop of golf, and America, in the 1930s, the book provides an informative and entertaining read for fans of the Masters and students of golf history. 1. Language: English. The second instalment of the Conclave of Shadows. The conclave demands its membership price from its new protégé: Tal must gather information on the sinister magician, Laso Varen. But to do this means service with the sorcerer's master, Duke Kaspar of Olasko--the very man he suspects of killing his family. A powerful new epic fantasy series from one of the great masters of the genre. Talon, orphan of the Orosini tribe and last of his people, has been transformed by the Conclave of Shadows from a trusting young boy to the dashing young nobleman Talwin Hawkins: educated, confident, and now Roldem's premier swordsman. The title, won at the Masters' Court, in front of the king, brought him a step closer to his desire--to avenge the massacre of his family. Two participants in the slaughter are dead by his hand; Lieutenant Campaneal fell under his blade during the Master's Tournament, and the other, Raven, died whilst attempting to butcher an Orodon village, as he did Tal's people. But still his lust for vengeance will not be sated until the reason for the massacres has been uncovered and their architect revealed and punished. The conclave demands its price from Tal: he must gather information on Laso Varen, a magician of terrible power and subtle craft, dangerous beyond contemplation. To do this means service with the sorcerer's master, Duke Kaspar of Olasko--and swearing loyalty to the very man he suspects of killing his family, even if it means becoming the duke's right hand and tracking down his enemies: the members of the conclave and Talon's own friends. 1. Cobras are technologically-enhanced warriors bred to fight an alien menace no ordinary human can withstand. At the center of action, on the Cobra world of Aventine, is the legendary Moreau clan. While the Cobras are necessary in times of war, in times of peace, they are often reviled by those they have saved. Now, the Cobras have resisted a second invasion of the alien Troft forces, forcing the Troft to a stalemate - even converting some thoughtful Troft into uneasy allies against their kin. Yet all is not well in the human sector of the galaxy. A supposed sister empire, the Dominion of Man, threatens the Cobra worlds with what is, in effect, enslavement, as it moves to consolidate power over all of the Cobra worlds. The plan on Aventine is to extort from the Moreau family the location of the home planet of a mysterious human ally - one that may even be more powerful than the Dominion: The Qasaman Empire. Meanwhile, Cobra Merrick Moreau is on a secret mission of his own, to a world where humans are enslaved by Troft masters. It is a world of barbaric cruelty, where humans are slave chattel to Troft gamblers. There the Troft force whole villages, even children, into life and death struggles served up for Troft entertainment. But the totalitarian Dominion of Man and the Troft game-masters are in for a rude surprise: Cobras are not merely technological marvels. They are far more. For within each Cobra, bred by close family ties and hard testing in battle, there beats the heart of a warrior and the burning conviction that a Cobra will be slave to no one. Rebellion is at hand, and once again, Cobras lead the fight for freedom. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki. This is the story of two small town childhood sweethearts from the 1950s, on the verge of graduating high school and becoming man and wife, when suddenly, heartbreaking tragedy tears their world apart. Now, with a broken destiny and an unplanned future that does not include each other, life continues to run in the wrong direction for both Jack Masters and Lillian Maxwell. Incredibly, though, this is also a story of love redeemed and a destiny ultimately fulfilled. Regardless of the fact that it has been almost half a century, and that a distance of over 10,000 miles separates the two, fate has supernaturally reconnected the couple, proving once again that it is never too late for a second chance at happiness. The story of Jack and Lillian is filled with teenage optimism, young love, tragedy, and hopelessness, but surprisingly, it culminates in absolute amazement and joy. With both a modern day setting as well as historical flashbacks, which include a number of 1950s rock and roll music legends, this story of hearts rescued, and lovers reunited, will draw you in and capture your heart. Tom DiFrancesca writes from the heart, passionately. He has experienced a great deal of both love and tragic loss in his lifetime. A parent should never have to bury one of their children and that hurt never fully leaves them. Hearts should never be broken but the author has been on the losing end of that deal, several times, as well. On the other hand, reuniting with a childhood sweetheart is not something that is limited to romance fiction, not by a long shot. The author has recently lived and breathed that experience for himself and he will now forever be a very thankful and happy man. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Nancy Isaacs. The Second Life of Tiger Woods (eBook, ePUB)

It's one of the greatest comebacks of all time. And for Tiger Woods—his game, his body, and his life in shambles—getting back to the winner's circle was only half the story. Here's the rest of it. Tiger Woods's long descent into a personal and professional hell reached bottom in the early hours of Memorial Day in 2017. Woods's DUI arrest that night came on the heels of a desperate spinal surgery, just weeks after he told close friends he might never play tournament golf again. His mug shot and alarming arrest video were painful to look at and, for Woods, a deep humiliation. The former paragon of discipline now found himself hopelessly lost and out of control, exposed for all the world to see. That episode could have marked the beginning of Tiger's end. It proved to be the opposite. Instead of sinking beneath the public disgrace of drug abuse and the private despair of a battered and ailing body, Woods embarked on the long road to redeeming himself. In The Second Life of Tiger Woods, Michael Bamberger, who has covered Woods since the golfer was an amateur, draws upon his deep network of sources inside locker rooms, caddie yards, clubhouses, fitness trailers, and back offices to tell the true and inspiring story of the legend's return. Packed with new information and graced by insight, Bamberger's story reveals how this iconic athlete clawed his way back to the top. Here you'll meet the people who have shaped and saved Tiger's life. It's a disparate group: a Florida police officer, an old friend from Tiger's boyhood, his girlfriend, his manager, his caddie. You'll go inside the ropes and see Tiger's interactions with fellow pros, with broadcasters and rules officials and Tour executives, with legends young (Rory McIlroy) and old (Jack Nicklaus) and in between (Fred Couples). On the Sunday before Masters Sunday, you'll join Tiger as he takes a long, slow, contemplative walk across Augusta National, and you'll be with him again seven days later in the splendid isolation of the tee at thirteen, in the rain, his right foot slipping while he swings his driver at 120 miles per hour. This is an intimate portrait of a man who has spent his life in front of the camera but has done his best to make sure he was never really known. Here is Tiger, barefoot, in handcuffs, showing a police officer a witty and self-deprecating side of himself that the public never sees. Here is Tiger on the verge of tears with his children at the British Open. Here is Tiger trying to express his gratitude to his mother at a ceremony at the Rose Garden. In these pages, Tiger is funny, cold, generous, self-absorbed, inspiring—and real. The Second Life of Tiger Woods is not only the saga of an exceptional man but also a celebration of second chances. Being rich and famous had nothing to do with Woods's return. Instead, readers will see him apply his intelligence, pride, and enormous capacity for work to the problems at hand. Bamberger's bracingly honest book is about what Tiger Woods did, and about what any of us can do, when we face our demons head-on.

Climate Dynamics of the Tropics

The first edition of my book "Climate and Circulation of the Tropics" was reasonably up to date to the middle of 1985. In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H. Lessmann, San Salvador, sent me updates of data series not easily accessible. I have benefitted from discussions with numerous colleagues in the United States and overseas. In the preparation of this second edition, Marilyn Wolff patiently transferred my illegible hand-written drafts onto word processor. Dierk Polzin and Dan Skemp assisted me with the creation of the page masters and the subject index and Christopher Collimore with the author index.
