Dublin, Ireland is a city rich in character. John Doyle, second-hand bookseller, is a kind man, a noble fellow, and a lousy businessman. Mac Malone, a vagabond living rough on the streets, is a ridiculous oaf whose personality is defined by jealousy, lust, gluttony, sloth, greed, fear, and pride. As John’s passion is corrupted by outside influences, Mac runs through the city like a ramshackle knight errant, battling the Seven Deadly Sins that hold his soul hostage. The stories of John and Mac intertwine and their adventures at times become one: the vagabond feast and the subsequent Duel To the Humiliation, an Irish bar fight that will make you want to hop the next flight to participate in one, the break-in of a spectacular castle with riotous consequences, as well as Mac’s exploits dealing with those pesky Sins...these are the tales that make up the essence of The Vagabonds of Dublin.Throw into that mix the most important ingredient, the people, a cast of eccentrics that would make a jump from the Cliffs of Moher seem dull, and you have a wildly entertaining novel. A grand adventure, a wild ride, a humanistic comedy about the evolution of the mind and the corruption of ideals...The Vagabonds of Dublin is all of these. It’s also a fun romp in the body of a profound drama, big on heart, and chock full of laughs. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Patrick Martens. SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2020 JHALAK PRIZE 1964. Ceylon is on the brink of change. But Kairo is at a loose end. School is closed, the government is in disarray, the press is under threat and the religious right are flexing their muscles. Kairo's hard-working mother blows off steam at her cha-cha-cha classes; his Trotskyite father grumbles over the state of the nation between his secret flutters on horseraces in faraway England. All Kairo wants to do is hide in his room and flick over second-hand westerns and superhero comics, or escape on his bicycle and daydream. Then he meets the magnetic teenage Jay, and his whole world is turned inside out. A budding naturalist and a born rebel, Jay keeps fish and traps birds for an aviary he is building in the garden of his grand home. The adults in Jay's life have no say in what he does or where he goes: he holds his beautiful, fragile mother in contempt, and his wealthy father seems fuelled by anger. But his Uncle Elvin, suave and worldly, is his encourager. As Jay guides him from the realm of make believe into one of hunting-guns and fast cars and introduces him to a girl - Niromi - Kairo begins to understand the price of privilege and embarks on a journey of devastating consequence. Taut and luminous, graceful and wild, Suncatcher is a poignant coming-of-age novel about difficult friendships and sudden awakenings. Mesmerizingly it charts the loss of innocence and our recurring search for love - or consolation - bringing these extraordinary lives into our own.

Sam Walton's Way , Hörbuch, Digital, 1, 28min

It would be difficult to overstate the impact Sam Walton had on American business, specifically retailing. The standalone box stores he pioneered have quite literally changed the nation's landscape. His innovations in supply-chain management and distribution totally reshaped the relationship between suppliers and retailers, and, for the most part, took wholesalers out of the equation. His insistence on low prices altered customers expectations of what they will have to pay for everything from socks to soda. Like few business leaders before or since, Sam Walton changed the world. Saturday, August 14, 1964, was a broiling hot day in Harrison, Arkansas - but the heat was the last thing on Sam Walton's mind. For the 46-year-old Walton, this was a big day: the grand opening of his second Wal-Mart. He was going to make damn sure it was a big success. He'd planned everything. In the parking lot, he'd had two truckloads of watermelons delivered and hired a donkey to provide rides for the kids. He headed outside to greet his first customers. What he saw would make most entrepreneurs lose their cool: The watermelons had burst, and donkey dung littered the lot. Walton's reaction was emblematic of his ability to rise above any challenge. He ignored the mess, smiled, walked up to the crowd, stuck out his hand, and said, "Welcome to Wal-Mart." That focus on customers is Walton's prime leadership lesson. But there are many others, beginning with his obsession with low prices - just the first step in a mission to deliver unbeatable value. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Suzanne Toren.
